Readers sound off on national tragedies, Rashida Tlaib and cutting the line - New York Daily News

Comparing suffering won’t alleviate any of it

Brooklyn: Re “Why 10/7 was worse than 9/11” (op-ed, Oct. 15): When horrific tragedy happens, there is a tendency to make comparisons — kind of like, “I wept over the man who lost his feet, until I met a man who lost his legs.”

Minoru Yamasaki’s mission statement on his design of the World Trade Center represented world peace (twice over). It was a spiritual honor to the beloved New Jerusalem, which touched upon the hope Yamasaki and many others hold in our hearts that world peace is attainable. It will come to pass, as foretold in Isaiah 2. The whole world was witness to these towers.

Despite the article’s mechanical assessment, 9/11 didn’t end on 9/11. What was built in the twin towers’ place is an ugly tribute to death and to generic, soulless architecture. It reflects an absence of peace. The memorial designer’s mission statement represented looking down into an abyss (twice over). The victims’ families sued to have the collective remains of their loved ones taken out of the Staten Island garbage dump and sent to a peaceful, quiet burial location. They were denied. Peace denied.

Do not make vacuous comparisons of suffering. Next, someone will be saying Jesus didn’t have it nearly as bad on the cross as someone else who was tortured and beheaded. Denial has caused so much evil already on this planet. And now, the galling indifference of denial makes me wanna puke. What’s next? “Well, what Israel suffered isn’t nearly so bad as…” Oh wait, that happened already, didn’t it? They’re even fighting over that. Nice and peaceful, isn’t it? Joy E. Goldberg

Forgotten

Bronx: It saddened me to realize that in his opening remarks on “Saturday Night Live,” host Pete Davidson left out the one horrific element that should have been there: the hostages Hamas terrorists took and Hamas’ failure to even offer to return them. It is all too easy, as Davidson did, to equate the images from Israel and Gaza. They are horrific. However, it is sad and tragic that he also failed to remind us of the hostages. Since he related this to 9/11, it behooved him to remember them just like the hostages on the planes on 9/11 who killed his father. Evil thrives when people like him fail to call it out when they can. Kenneth S. Gelnick

Responsible party

Flushing: Israel is under international pressure over halting deliveries of food, water, fuel and electricity to Gaza. Israel says it will not allow aid to enter Gaza until Hamas releases the hostages. The international community must transfer its pressure from Israel to Hamas. Realizing that Hamas wants to gain sympathy by letting civilians suffer as Hamas holds the hostages, Israel will soon relent and allow aid to flow into Gaza. Hamas has devoted much of its resources to funding military infrastructure, having bought and built a vast arsenal of rockets that are fired without warning toward Israeli homes, and constructed an extensive network of underground tunnels through which fighters and weapons are moved and stored. They have neglected to build any air raid shelters to protect Gaza’s civilians from Israeli airstrikes, which often follow attacks by Hamas (Israeli buildings have bomb shelters). Why doesn’t Hamas invite civilians to find refuge inside the tunnels? Theodore Sheskin

Flag offense

Aiken, S.C.: I am fed up with politicians who refuse to abide by our Constitution, so I won’t mince words when I see a criminal act of treason committed by politicians who are supposed to abide by it and represent the people. Rep. Rashida Tlaib is guilty of violating her oath of office and promoting the heinous act of genocide against the people of Israel. She had the unmitigated gall to post a Palestinian flag outside her office. This miserable excuse of a human being should be removed from office forthwith and charged with treason, along with the other members of The Squad who are taking the side of Hamas, a murderous, soulless affront to humanity and against all that America stands for. Gregory J. Topliff

Squandered opportunities

Cedarhurst, L.I.: To Voicer Joe Gomes: The UN vote for Palestinian statehood that occurred in 1947 would have divided the current state of Israel into six parts, three for Israel and three for the Arabs. The Jews accepted, but the Arab countries did not. Prime Ministers Yitzhak Rabin, Ehud Barak and Ehud Olmert all met on the White House lawn to sign treaties towards statehood, and all led to intifada. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon drove all of the Jews out of Gaza and gave it to the Arabs. Instead of land for peace, Israel got territories for terrorism. Yitzchak Moskowitz

Let there be light

Howard Beach: The human animal gravitates between two poles: The rule of law and the law of the jungle. The latter’s pull is very strong now. Because of it, we suffer and create suffering for ourselves and especially for others. Hope and prayer aren’t the answer. “Let there be light” is misunderstood. The light is in us. Light is self-knowledge. Unbridled emotions and thoughts abound. Taming and understanding our minds takes practice. Let us therefore be diligent and awaken from darkness. Let there be light. Ernest Kienzle

Entrenched officials

Linden, N.J.: To President Biden: Isn’t it right that a person retires when they get old? How come you politicians often feel that doesn’t apply to you? How come you refuse to see that someone younger could do your job better? Ron Jackowski

Nice odds

Holliswood: Your editorial “K-12 gauge” (Oct. 15) states: “An investigation by the Washington Post last week established that at least 1,150 guns were reportedly discovered in someone’s possession at a K-12 school in the United States last school year, several of them a day.” 1,150 guns in 50 states throughout the whole year? There are approximately 130,930 K-12 schools in the U.S.A., according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). That’s an infinitesimal chance of encountering a school with a reported gun on any given day. Get a grip and stop gaslighting your readers with your woke, divisive, anti-gun agenda. Gregory W. Chupa

Missed feature

Hempstead, L.I.: Why didn’t the Daily News have the “Justice Story” on Sunday? Leslie Feldman

Overgrown road

Bronx: Hats off to Voicer Rose Mary Lancaster. Shore Road is a total mess. Something should be done about it ASAP. It’s a disgrace. Ralph Canzone Sr.

Exit right

Bronx: I’m sure I will get no objections to this: Anyone who has driven on a highway or parkway hates when they are waiting in line to get off at an exit and drivers cut in right at the start of the exit ramp. Put up the same cameras that catch speeders in school zones. The city will rake in millions and it’ll teach these rude, impatient, ill-mannered drivers how to wait like the rest of us. John Cirolia

Fan pressure

New Windsor, N.Y.: Wake up, Yankees fans. The team will not change until Hal Steinbrenner is hurt in the wallet. Stop purchasing tickets and merchandise, and stop watching the YES Network. Hal cared so much for his fans that he sold games to Prime and Apple TV. Can you imagine a front office that believed Aaron Hicks and Clint Frazier were better ballplayers than Bryce Harper based on analytics? Where are those players now? I never knew analytic data was able to hit a baseball. Why not just have a team of data processors and not real baseball players? Wake up and boycott the Yankees until they decide to rid themselves of analytics and hire people who know how to pick winning ballplayers. Gregory Van Den Berg

Out in the open

Madera, Calif.: Concerning Coming Out Day: While it is great that so many celebrities are coming out, be they gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, it is important to remember that for many, the option of coming out is not possible, as we face many who oppose us and seek our end. Every day, we see anti-LGBTQ legislation enacted in many states across America. I say don’t call yourself LGBTQ or even an ally if you’re not willing to fight for the cause. Robyn Angelique Harvey
