SMC to Host “Experiential Design, Driven by Music and Sound” with Dr. Jason Heath March 19 - - Santa Monica Daily Press

Santa Monica College (SMC) will host “Experiential Design, Driven by Music and Sound,” a free presentation featuring Dr. Jason Heath, founder and CEO of experiential design studio Heath Interactive.

The presentation will be held at 11:15 a.m. Thursday, March 19, in Stromberg Hall (HSS 165) on the main SMC campus, 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica. Seating is on a first-arrival basis.

Dr. Heath takes an interdisciplinary approach to crafting unique immersive and interactive experiences. He will talk about what it is like to work with collaborators — ranging from architects to game developers, sculptors, and fabric artists — to create projects such as an interactive musical playground for children on the autism spectrum, and a large fabric interface that controls more than 3,000 LEDs, musical sounds, and tactile vibrations at the recently opened Cayton Children’s Museum in Santa Monica. Dr. Heath’s presentation will include interactive demonstrations and some of the current working prototypes that integrate sensors, light, sound, and musical experiences.

Heath Interactive works with museums, hospitals, brands, and “other visionaries to open more access to sustained musical experiences and other interactive media.”

The event is sponsored by the SMC Associates, a private organization that funds speakers and special programs on campus. Additional sponsors: SMC Art Department, SMC Design Technology Department, SMC Health Sciences Department, and SMC Music Department.

More information is available by calling the SMC Office of Public Programs at 310-434-4100.
