Ouray County has four new confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported today, according to county officials.

Health officials are investigating the four cases as a possible outbreak. More details were not available Sunday night.

The cases involve four men – a 65-year-old man who was tested in San Miguel County, as well as a 35-year-old man, a 28-year-old man and a 27-year-old man, all Ouray County residents. It's not clear where or when the men were tested at this time.

These four latest cases push the county above the threshold for a possible mitigation plan and may result in the county receiving more restrictive protocols to slow infection rates. The threshold was 8 new cases in two weeks.

Ouray County is currently classified in the "safer at home: cautious" phase of reopening, the second-most open phase on the state's color-coded dial. Ouray County has a goal of reaching the least-restrictive category, "protect our neighbors" which allows for larger gatherings and events if lower virus levels exist and resources are available for testing and treatment, among other criteria.

There's also a variance for more capacity at pools in Ouray County currently, allowing up to 50 percent capacity at pools, or up to 250 swimmers outdoors or 175 swimmers at indoor pools.

Some other Western Slope counties have transitioned to more cautious protocols recently with increased virus levels. Neighboring San Juan County announced last week it would be moving to the "safer at home: high risk" category, and would take measures to reduce interactions between people, shrink gatherings and limit risk of infection. These measures for Silverton and the rest of the county include:

  • Limiting public and private gatherings to 10 individuals from no more than two different households.

  • Non-critical retail businesses may operate at 25% of the posted occupancy limit.

  • Personal services may operate at 25% of the posted occupancy limit, not to exceed 25 people per room.

  • Restaurants may operate at 25% of the posted occupancy limit indoors not to exceed 50 people excluding staff, whichever is less, per room.

  • Churches may operate at 25% or 50 people for indoor services. For outdoor worship services, 6 feet distance is required between non-household members.

  • Indoor events may operate at 50 percent capacity or 25 people, whichever is fewer

Other areas of the Western Slope have also seen increased case numbers recently – most notably with Mesa County having 755 positive cases reported in the past two weeks as of Sunday.

Montrose County has had fewer new cases reported in the past two weeks compared to Mesa County, but has had a higher positivity rate of 7.2 percent in the past two weeks as of Sunday.
