College Football Playoff rankings: Texas A&M left out of CFP’s final four - The Dallas Morning News

Texas A&M and coach Jimbo Fisher made an impassioned College Football Playoff case Saturday by winning its regular season finale over Tennessee.

It wasn’t enough.

When the CFP selection committee unveiled its final rankings Sunday morning from Grapevine, Notre Dame (10-1) got the nod for the fourth and final playoff spot, just ahead of the Aggies (8-1).

The Irish will face No. 1 Alabama (11-0) at AT&T Stadium in the transplanted Rose Bowl on Jan. 1. The Sugar Bowl gets No. 2 Clemson (10-1) and No. 3 Ohio State (6-0).

Never mind the 24-point blowout loss that the Fighting Irish suffered in the ACC title game against Clemson. The committee gave Notre Dame the nod based on earlier wins over Clemson (minus Trevor Lawrence) and North Carolina.

“You painted the picture of two teams that have really similar resumes and they’ve played similar schedules,” CFP selection committee chairman Gary Barta told ESPN’s Rece Davis. “But in the end, the committee felt like Notre Dame had earned its way there with the complete analysis of the resume and that came down to having an additional win over a ranked team.”

Texas A&M’s best win was against Florida. The Aggies also had a 28-point loss at Alabama early but have won seven straight games, their longest streak since 1998.

“You’re 8-1 in the SEC,” Fisher said immediately after the Tennessee game. “We lost to the No. 1 team in the country [Alabama]. I want see someone else go 8-1 in this league and stand up and do it. We can play with anybody.”

Fisher also took a veiled swipe at the schedule of No. 3 Ohio State, which played just six games in the Big Ten.

“Seven straight SEC wins. Seven straight SEC wins,” Fisher said. “Some schools ain’t even playing seven games.”

But Barta said “in the end, there was not dissension in the room about naming Ohio State in that third spot.”

Several A&M players weighed in on social media. Quarterback Kellen Mond cut to the chase with this tweet:

A&M is likely bound for the Orange Bowl to face North Carolina and very familiar face in former Texas coach Mack Brown. The official announcements for the New Year’s Bowls will be made Sunday afternoon.

Texas could move up to the Alamo Bowl if the Big 12 places both Oklahoma and Iowa State in a New Year’s Six bowl. Most recent projections had the Longhorns in the Cheez-It Bowl.
