DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke University men's and women's golf programs will be well represented when the 2020 Arnold Palmer Cup begins Monday at Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando, Fla. The men's tandem of seniors Adrien Pendaries and Evan Katz will compete along with women's golf junior Gina Kim, while women's golf head coach Dan Brooks will coach the United States squad.
The three-day Ryder Cup-style event features the top men's and women's college golfers matching the United States against their International counterparts. Katz and Kim will compete for the U.S. with Brooks serving as coach, while Pendaries will tee it up for the Internationals. The Blue Devils are the only men's program with athletes on both sides.
The seven-time National Coach of the Year, Brooks has guided Duke to seven NCAA Championships, 20 ACC Championships and a NCAA-record 138 all-time victories as a head coach.
A native of Chapel Hill, N.C., Kim was a WGCA Second Team All-American as a rookie and then earned Golfweek Honorable Mention All-America accolades a sophomore at Duke. She made a splash at the 2019 U.S. Women's Open as she earned low amateur accolades with rounds of 66, 72, 73 and 72 for a one-under-par, 283. Kim played a key role in leading Duke to the 2019 NCAA Championship as a freshman in Fayetteville, Ark.
A Washington, D.C., native Katz led the Blue Devils with a 70.92 stroke average last season, followed closely by Pendaries' 71.00. In his three years on the team, the French-born Pendaries has played to a 71.64 average, which ranks third on Duke's all-time list, while posting an impressive 9-3 mark in match play events. Pendaries was an All-ACC pick in 2019 and is a two-time PING All-Region pick.
It marks the third straight year the women's program will be represented at the Arnold Palmer Cup as Ana Belac led the International squad to a victory in 2019 and Jaravee Boonchant participated for the International squad.
For the men, this marks the second straight season and fifth time in history the Blue Devils have been represented. Former golfer Alex Smalley competed for the United States side last season, with Ryan Blaum playing for the U.S. in 2005 and 2006. Former head coach Rod Myers served as coach in 1998.
Players, coaches, and staff will be tested upon arrival and enter a bubble for the duration of the event. Daily COVID screening will also take place for all players, coaches, staff, and patrons entering the property at Bay Hill Club & Lodge.
Originally scheduled to be played July 3-5 at Lahinch Golf Club in Lahinch, Ireland, the event was moved to December to Mr. Palmer's winter home, the Bay Hill Club & Lodge. The inaugural Arnold Palmer Cup was staged there in 1997 and Bay Hill will be the first venue to host the matches twice.
The Arnold Palmer Cup was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and began at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Orlando, Fla., in 1997. The event is a Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring the top men's and women's university/college golfers matching the United States against a team of International players. The Arnold Palmer Cup has been played at some of the world's greatest courses including The Old Course, The Royal County Down, Royal Portrush, Baltusrol, The Honors Course, and Cherry Hills. The 2018 matches at Evian Resort Golf Club became the only major tournament which features men and women playing side-by-side as partners.
