From ‘Tyrant’ To ‘Friend’ — World Leaders Welcome Biden After ‘Four Long Years’ Of Trump - Forbes

Topline

Many world leaders are heralding the arrival of seasoned diplomat President-elect Joe Biden to the White House as an opportunity to begin anew and repair relationships—after a trying four years of President Trump’s unconventional leadership style and aggressive “America First” policy that left many countries isolated.

Key Facts

After years of strained relations with Trump’s Washington, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen celebrated the news that, “once again, after four long years, Europe has a friend in the White House.”

Charles Michel, the president of the European Council, said the EU-U.S. relationship “has greatly suffered” during Trump’s presidency and that he welcomes Biden’s inauguration as an opportunity to repair it, calling on the incoming president to “build a new founding pact for a stronger Europe, for a stronger America and for a better world.”

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani struck a decidedly more hostile tone than most leaders, calling Trump a “tyrant” and celebrating today as “the final day of his ominous reign" before urging Biden to lift sanctions and return to the landmark Obama-era nuclear deal that Trump pulled the U.S. out of.

Jens Stoltenberg, the head of military organization NATO, which Trump regularly criticized, tweeted that he is looking forward to working with Biden to “further strengthen” the transatlantic ties between the U.S. and Europe, which will be needed to “face global challenges none of us can tackle alone.”

Mikhail Gorbachev, who was the first president of the Soviet Union, urged Biden to do more to “normalize relations” with Russia, which have soured considerably under Trump (Gorbachev did not mention Trump at all) and are of “great concern” today, Gorbachev said, adding that the two countries cannot “fence ourselves off from each other.”

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson told politicians that he is looking forward to working with Biden, “strengthening the partnership between our countries and working on our shared priorities from tackling climate change, building back better from the pandemic and strengthening our transatlantic security.''

Writing before Biden’s inauguration, Johnson’s predecessor Theresa May, who was the first foreign leader to meet Trump in the White House, cheered the change in American leadership as a “golden opportunity,” slamming Trump as an unpredictable strongman who “whipped up… a partisan mob” that assaulted the Capitol.

Key Background

President-elect Joe Biden will become the 46th President of the United States on Wednesday. Breaking with longstanding tradition, Donald Trump will not be present at the inauguration ceremony, but delivered farewell remarks early Wednesday morning at Maryland’s Joint Base Andrews, before taking off on Air Force One for the last time for his Mar-A-Lago resort in Florida. Security in the capital is on high alert, with 25,000 National Guard on standby, following pro-Trump riots at the Capitol in a bid to disrupt the certification of Electoral College votes deeming Biden victor. Though he will have left office, Trump now faces an unprecedented second impeachment hearing for his alleged role in stirring up a violent mob to storm the Capitol.
