Twenty-Four Wolverines at NHL Training Camps

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Twenty-four former University of Michigan ice hockey players will be back on the ice when the National Hockey League opens training camps, the most of any NCAA program.

The seven teams that did not qualify for the 2020 postseason will have an extended training camp as they were allowed to open last Thursday (Dec. 31). The other 24 teams were allowed to begin camps Sunday (Jan. 3).

The league is set to begin its 56-game schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 13, with a realignment of teams due to COVID-19 restrictions. The four divisions include North (Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, Winnipeg Jets); West (Anaheim Ducks, Arizona Coyotes, Colorado Avalanche, Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota Wild, San Jose Sharks, St. Louis Blues, Vegas Golden Knights); Central (Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Nashville Predators, Tampa Bay Lightning); and East (Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals), and teams will play only within their divisions. The top four teams in each division will quality for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Washington Capitals: Carl Hagelin
Winnipeg Jets: Andrew Copp, Kyle Connor

The American Hockey League (AHL) announced on Dec. 30 it is planning on a Feb. 5 start date.
