How not to start the day: As I was leaving a coffee shop, a kid of about 4 pointed at me and said, “Trash truck!”
Had the kid seen the inside of my car or something?
• Warning — my wurst item: It’s one sports event that even the most casual fan can get excited about. Oh, the pageantry, the dazzling performances, the exciting action at the finish line…
I don’t mean the Olympics. I mean the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Dog Nationals at the Los Alamitos Race Track.
Alas, the spectacle, involving 100 pooches who scamper 50 yards, has been postponed in recent years because of Covid fears. But when I talked to track spokesman Orlando Gutierrez, he held out hope that it will resume soon.
“We’re looking forward to announcing a new date in the fall,” he said. I hope so. It’s fun to see the little guys, especially the ones with minds of their own execute U-turns or stop to pose for photographers during the middle of the action.
• Speedy creatures (cont.) : Reader Inger Nelson relayed a warning about a 4-legged villain whose dream is to capture a certain character (see photo).
Which raised a philosophical question. Is the sound uttered in the cartoon ”meep, meep” or “beep beep?”
The tireless folks (and robots) in Google’s “People ask…” section responded: “Though commonly quoted as ‘meep meep,’ Warner Bros., the current owner of all trademarks relating to the duo, lists ‘beep beep’ as the Road Runner’s sound along with ‘meep meep.’” Wow. Now there’s a careful response.
Wouldn’t you just love to hear a Waner Bros. trademark attorney utter “beep beep” in a courtroom?
Maybe Zeep the Sheep should mediate, though I’ve heard he’s not cheap, cheap.
• Final thought: Perhaps with all the confusion over who’s going to work in the office or at home, workers should consider this pledge to allay the fears of employers (see photo). Or maybe they already do.
