The Rockies coasted to a 9-4 victory on Friday night with a barrage of four home runs against the Padres.
Ryan McMahon blasted his first career grand slam that ended a personal drought. The Colorado infielder had not homered in 29 consecutive games before his 402-foot bomb.
Connor Joe, a San Diego native, recorded a two-run blast.
Brendan Rodgers was also credited with a two-run homer — instead of an RBI double — due to fan interference. It occurred when a gloved Padres supporter altered left fielder Adam Frazier’s glove from the Petco Park stands on a missed catch at the wall.
Elias Diaz capped off the power surge with a solo homer. Colorado led 9-0 in the fifth.
“Our guys swung the bat well tonight,” manager Bud Black said.
Rockies’ starter Jon Gray was excellent with two runs allowed on four hits over 6-1/3 innings. Gray’s only real blemish among 106 pitches — a two-run homer from Manny Machado in the sixth. Gray got pulled after issuing consecutive one-out walks in the seventh.
“He might have tired just a touch at the end,” Black said. “But I still thought his stuff was good. … He pitched aggressive and he was on the attack all night.”
Gray expressed relief that he was not moved ahead of Friday’s trade deadline. The Rockies are now working on a deal to keep him in Colorado.
“I was very pleased with it,” Gray said. “I’m happy that I get to put on purple. It just fired me up for the game. It was a good day.”
Colorado turned to Tyler Kinley from the bullpen and he delivered two critical outs in the seventh. But the right-hander gave up a leadoff single in the eighth. Then Machado smashed his second homer of the night. However, Ben Bowden closed the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
A dramatic first inning laid the groundwork for a blowout.
C.J. Cron walked with two outs when Charlie Blackmon hit what appeared to be an RBI double to the left corner off Padres’ starter Ryan Weathers. Further video inspection revealed the baseball got stuck between the wall padding for a ground-rule double that erased Cron’s run. Black discussed the situation for several minutes with the umpiring crew.
It was a bad break that ultimately didn’t matter. Diaz walked to load the bases and McMahon took care of the rest with his grand slam. The Rockies went up 4-0.
Padres’ All-Star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. suffered an apparent left shoulder injury in the first. It happened while sliding toward third. He writhed in pain on the ground for several moments before athletic trainers assisted his exit to the clubhouse. Tatis was replaced at shortstop by Ha-Seong Kim.
“That’s a blow to baseball,” Black said. “He’s one of the best players in the game.”
The Rockies (45-59) have scored at least seven runs in three of their last four road games. They face the Padres again on Saturday night in San Diego.
