ELON, N.C. – Elon University volleyball and North Carolina A&T are set to cohost the Aggie/Phoenix Volley for Unity tournament this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10-11.
On Friday, Elon takes on UNC Asheville in a 6 p.m. match at Schar Center while the Aggies (3-3) will host N.C. Central for a 6 p.m. match in Greensboro, N.C. Saturday's matches will all be played at Elon, starting with a 12 p.m. contest between A&T and Mercer followed by a 3 p.m. tilt between the Eagles (1-4) and the Bulldogs (1-4). The Phoenix (3-4) then rounds out the tournament with a 6 p.m. meeting with the Bears (3-3).

Live stats will be available and all of the matches at Schar Center will be streamed live on FloSports.
VOLLEY FOR UNITY
- Elon and N.C. A&T have partnered to bring awareness to diversity and equity within their local communities. This weekend's Volley for Unity tournament is to bring awareness and support for the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Greensboro and Alamance. The Boys & Girls Clubs mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us the most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens. Fans can donate to both the Elon and N.C. A&T fundraising pages through Sunday at 5 p.m.
ABOUT THE PHOENIX
- After securing 3-0 sweeps at Presbyterian and Furman last weekend, Elon was unable to make it three wins in a row as the maroon and gold dropped its home opener to Charlotte, 3-0 on Wednesday.
- Sydney Love tied her season high with 12 kills, Natalie Cummins tied her career best of 11 kills, and Jordan Gower eclipsed 600 career digs.
- Cummins converted 11-of-13 attempts with just one attack error for a .769 hitting percentage.
- The 49ers (5-2) extended their lead in the all-time series to 9-7.
- Entering this weekend's tournament, Leah Daniel leads Elon's offense with 89 kills (3.87/set), followed by Love with 50 (2.50/set). Haylie Clark is up to 206 assists (8.96/set) and Alex VanWestrienen is the team's top server with nine aces. Gower needs three digs to reach 100 on the season and Jenn Krzeminski has the high in blocks with 28 (eight solo).
THE SERIES
- Elon and UNC Asheville are meeting for the first time since Sept. 6, 2014 when Asheville took a five-set match at the Kennesaw State Invitational. The Bulldogs have won the previous two meetings and own an 18-9 lead in the all-time series.
- Elon and Mercer last met for two matches during the 2003 season. The Phoenix earned a 3-2 victory in the final match of the Elon Phoenix Classic on Sept. 6, then won in four sets at the Auburn Challenge on Sept. 20. The all-time series is currently tied at 2-2.
SCOUTING ASHEVILLE
- Asheville was picked to finish fifth in the Big South Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll with 64 total points. Peyton McClinton was also named to the Preseason All-Conference Team after earning All-Big South Second Team honors in the spring.
- The Bulldogs most recently competed in Tennessee Tech's Golden Eagle Invitational on Sept. 3-4, falling in straight sets to Valparaiso, South Alabama and the tournament hosts. Despite the three losses, Nina Finderle landed on the All-Tournament Team.
- Molly Hackett and McClinton lead Asheville with 50 and 45 kills, respectively. Grace Volk is the primary setter with 131 assists, Anna Skyrd has a team-high 68 digs, and Lexy Cole and Finderle have combined for 23 blocks.
SCOUTING MERCER
- Mercer had an unsuccessful trip to the University of Denver Tournament, falling to Northeastern in four sets before a pair of 3-0 setbacks against Northern Colorado and the host Pioneers.
- The Bears garnered three first-place votes and 58 points to place second in the SoCon's Preseason Coaches' Poll. Additionally, Jaida Howell and Annie Karle were selected to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
- Mercer's current stats leaders include Taylor Lynch (66 kills), Agnieska Paskevic (148 assists), Karle (seven aces), Megan Smith (107 digs) and Paige Wagers (17 blocks).
UP NEXT
- Elon is back on the road next Tuesday, Sept. 14 as the Phoenix plays a 6 p.m. match at North Carolina.
