CHICAGO – The only thing hotter than the soaring temperatures in Lincoln Park on Saturday was the sizzling bats of the Blue Demons.
The warmest day of the spring, a stiff wind blowing out to left and center field along with hard contact all over Cacciatore Stadium were a potent mix as DePaul swept a BIG EAST doubleheader from Georgetown 10-2 in six innings and 17-0 in five innings.
On a day when Cacciatore played like Coors Field, coach Tracy Adix-Zins' Blue Bombers won their sixth in a row and have an eight-game conference winning streak.
How about two grand slams on the day? Brooke Johnson clouted one in the opener in the fourth inning that broke that game wide open.
Tori Meyer went yard with the bases loaded in the third inning of the nightcap highlighting a 10-run outburst.
That very same inning, freshman Carly Alvers hit the first home run of her collegiate career with Baylee Cosgrove aboard. Batting for the second time in the same inning, Alvers blasted a three-run homer to left-center.
At that point, the scoreboard read: DePaul 16, Georgetown 0.
When the smoke cleared at the end of the third inning, 15 batters had come to the plate for the home team.
Riley Poole closed out the scoring in the bottom of the fourth with---what else?---a solo home run to left.
DePaul (23-19, 11-6 BIG EAST) jumped out to 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an Anna Wohlers RBI double followed by Kate Polucha's run-scoring single.
Baylee Cosgrove and Johnson each tallied an RBI double in the second inning and Skylor Hilger added a two-run double for a 6-0 lead.
Then came the 10-run avalanche in the third.
With calculator in hand, here are DePaul's grand totals for Saturday's two games.
