DURHAM – The Duke baseball program has added four graduate transfers to the 2021-22 team, head coach Chris Pollard announced on Thursday.
David Dunn, Trevor Johnson, Ben LaSpaluto and John Natoli will join the Blue Devils this fall and look to make immediate impacts on the field.
David Dunn – UTL – R/R – Alpharetta, Ga. – Northwestern
Dunn, a utility player from Alpharetta, Ga., concluded his undergraduate career at Northwestern before transferring to Duke to take advantage of the eligibility relief due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Dunn batted .269 in his 98-game career, including 15 doubles, three triples, six home runs and 36 RBIs. In addition, he stole 11 bases and put together a .995 fielding percentage.
Trevor Johnson – OF – R/R – Rye, N.Y. – Dartmouth
Johnson wrapped up a four-year career at Dartmouth in the spring of 2020. An outfielder, he played two seasons while missing the majority of 2018 due to injury and 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Johnson also missed the 2021 season due to the pandemic. He slashed .216/.343/.339 in his career while appearing in 87 games for Dartmouth. Johnson made an immediate impact for the Big Green as a freshman, earning the team's Rookie of the Year honor and being named the Ivy League Co-Player of the Week once and the conference's Rookie of the Week twice.
Ben LaSpaluto – INF – R/R – Apex, N.C. – Gardner-Webb
LaSpaluto batted .256 with 20 doubles, six triples, 13 home runs and 67 RBIs in his career at Gardner-Webb. He also slugged .387 while recording a .326 on-base percentage. His best season was the most recent in 2021, ranking fourth on the team in batting average with a .278 clip on his way to Big South All-Academic Team honors. The Apex, N.C., native stole eight bases on the year and recorded a career-high 22 RBI and 50 hits. In his final game at Gardner-Webb, LaSpaluto went a career-best 4-for-4 with a double and run scored against top-seeded Campbell in the Big South Tournament title game.
John Natoli – RHP – R/R – Fairfield, Conn. – Cornell
Natoli finished his career with a 6-2 record and 2.17 ERA in 34 appearances as a right-handed pitcher at Cornell. A native of Fairfield, Conn., Natoli missed the majority of the 2020 season and the 2021 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019 as a sophomore, Natoli was stellar. He made a team-leading 19 appearances with one start on his way to being the lone relief pitcher on the All-Ivy League first team, a unanimous selection. He boasted a team-best 1.73 ERA (0.77 out of the bullpen) and a 5-2 record in 36.1 innings pitched. Natoli recorded seven saves on the season, the fourth-most in a single season in Cornell history. In addition, he led Cornell in strikeouts, boasting 11.47 strikeouts per nine innings.
