Inman football has dominant start to the season with four shutouts - CatchItKansas

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Inman football has steadily improved it’s winning record over the last four years. This year, the Tuetons are off to a 4-0 start. More impressively, they have not allowed any point to be scored on them so far this season.

“We’ve had some really talented kids. We’ve had some really talented kids come through, we’ve had some stability with our coaching staff, that’s been huge,” said Inman head football coach Lance Sawyer.

Sawyer said the returning experience and dedication to the weight room has been the difference maker for them this season.

“We’ve really focused on getting the kids into the weight room. They’ve made some tremendous strides in the last four years,” mentioned Sawyer.

Senior inside linebacker and running back Kyler Konrade added, “Looking back, we weren’t very strong and not too long ago we went 0-9. So, we’ve just stayed consistent in the weight room during the summer and throughout the year.”

The Tuetons have scored nearly 250 points in four games this season and haven’t given up a single point to an opponent. They’re boasting four straight shutout games.

“We’re playing really well. I feel like we’re in mid-season form as we should be,” said senior quarterback Jace Doerksen. “Our defense in flying around, making plays. Our line is doing a great job, we’re all just kind of meshing together.”

“Our defensive coach does a tremendous job with our defense. I think the biggest thing he preaches is to play fast. We’ve simplified things down, the kids are just being athletes out there,” said Sawyer. “They’re just flying around, making tackles.”

With the increased strength coming back this year and most of the players with two or three years of starting experience, speed makes this Inman team even harder to beat.

“We have a lot of guys who made the state track meet last year. I think we’re strong and fast,” said Doerksen.

Sawyer commented, “We have guys that were on the state 4xx4 team, the state 4x1 team and they’re surrounded.”

Getting knocked out in the state semifinals last year, the Tuetons hope they can put all the pieces together to win a 1A state championship this year.

Covington Approves Forgivable Loans for Four Businesses - The River City News

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

Four Covington businesses are set to receive forgivable city loans following approval this week by the city commission.

The money will be used to improve the exteriors of the four businesses' commercial properties.

Two of the properties support woman-owned businesses, two will add jobs, and three will utilize local contractors for the façade projects. Ross Patten, assistant director of the City of Covington’s economic development department, called that scenario a “win-win-win.”

“It’s great to see four existing businesses tap into our façade program this round, but it’s even more impressive to see their commitment to the community by hiring local Covington contractors,” Patten said.

The businesses fall in three neighborhoods: Mutter Gottes, MainStrasse, and downtown.

Tippcork-Rooskey LLC is performing a major rehab on a highly visible building at 106 E. Fourth St. (next to Molly Malone’s Irish Pub) that is the new home of Garden Grove Organics, a horticulture supply shop that moved from Scott Blvd.

The $4,075 loan will help fund $8,150 in façade improvements that include new signage for Garden Grove and a new wall mural, both to be created by Covington contractors. Separately, work on the building, which once housed a series of restaurants, has included $43,000 in exterior improvements and $80,000 in interior renovation.

Garden Grove Organics is adding three jobs to go with the two employees it’s retained.

Juan and Rachel Hiraldo will receive $6,000 toward $16,000 in exterior work at 613 Main St., where they own and operate Vivify Counseling and Wellness.

The project includes repairing, tuck-pointing, and sealing the building’s masonry; repairing damaged cornices and soffit; repainting; and adding a railing. It’s accompanying $15,000 in interior work.

This façade loan, then, supports an existing woman-owned business that will add two employees at its new location.

Main Street Medical is a longtime business – Pediatric Care of Kentucky at 924 Main St. Its $4,300 loan will go toward $8,600 in exterior work, including painting and washing, scraping, and painting all wood and trim as well as metal window sashes, and metal flashing, valleys, lights, mailbox, and doors.

That work accompanies $25,155 in interior work.

The project will use a Covington contractor and is in a section of MainStrasse that has to date seen less investment.

Kathleen Jones owns the med-spa Kathy Jones Aesthetics, which opened in 2019 at 120 W. Fifth St. Her $6,000 loan will go toward a $25,000 repair and restoration of nearly all the property’s historic windows, plus painting, which will be done by a local contractor. The project accompanies $25,000 in interior work.

This loan supports a woman-owned business.

Patten pointed out that the four recipients leveraged more than $80,375 in private investment, a nearly 4:1 ratio of private-to-public investment, and support the growth of four Covington businesses.

Three rounds left

The collective $20,375 in façade incentives represents Round 1 of the city’s annual Small Business Program, which again this fiscal year has $150,000 available. The approved incentives leave $129,625 on the table to fund future rounds of funding, which occur quarterly.

The rent subsidy program offers up to $500 a month for first-year rent for 12 months. The façade improvement program offers a forgivable loan of up to $6,000 to match dollar-for-dollar investments in exterior improvements to a commercial building.

Here are the key issues facing Congress today. - The New York Times

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

In a pivotal week, in a make-or-break stretch for President Biden’s domestic agenda, congressional Democrats are trying to assemble a puzzle of four jagged pieces that may or may not fit together.

Making them work as a whole is critical for the party’s agenda and political prospects. Failure could have major electoral and economic consequences — including the potential of a first-ever default on the government’s debt that could precipitate a global financial crisis. Here are all the moving parts.

Lawmakers entered this week facing a critical deadline: At a second past midnight on Friday morning, the parts of the government that operate under the discretion of Congress’s annual spending process had been set to run out of money.

Oct. 1 is the beginning of the fiscal year, and with larger issues dominating their attention, the Democratic House and Senate have not completed any of the annual appropriations bills to fund the Departments of Defense, Transportation, Health and Human Services, State and Homeland Security, to name a few.

On Thursday afternoon, lawmakers averted a potential shutdown. The Senate passed a stopgap bill that would keep federal funding flowing into December and allow more time for the annual appropriations bills to be completed. The House quickly passed the bill as well, clearing the way for Mr. Biden to sign it and keep the government funded.

Raising the debt limit is akin to paying off your credit card bill at the end of the month, because a higher borrowing ceiling allows the Treasury to pay creditors, contractors and agencies money that was already extracted from them in Treasury bonds and notes or contracts. It is not for future obligations.

Republicans have made it clear that they intend to filibuster an ordinary bill to raise the debt ceiling, as they did on Monday. For Democrats to do so unilaterally, they would most likely have to use a budget process called reconciliation that shields fiscal measures from a filibuster.

Doing so is a complex and time-consuming affair. It all has to be done in the next two to three weeks, to beat the rapidly approaching “X date” when the government defaults. Janet Yellen, the Treasury secretary, told Congress on Tuesday that the deadline is Oct. 18.

In August, with rare bipartisan swagger, the Senate passed a $1 trillion bill to build or fortify roads, bridges, tunnels, transit and rural broadband networks. The 69 “yes” votes included Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, and 18 others from his party. Then it got more complicated.

Pressing for a quick vote on the bill, nine conservative-leaning Democrats in the House threatened to withhold their votes for the party’s $3.5 trillion budget blueprint until the Senate-passed infrastructure bill cleared their chamber. But now liberals in the House are threatening to withhold their votes for the infrastructure measure until the budget blueprint has successfully made its way through reconciliation.

Democrats’ exceedingly ambitious social policy bill, which Mr. Biden calls his “Build Back Better” plan, is packed with longstanding party priorities. The House has drafted a 2,465-page version that includes a huge array of programs to combat climate change, the extension of a generous child tax credit, universal prekindergarten, greatly expanded access to community college, increased resources for elder care and paid leave, and a Medicare expansion to cover vision, hearing and dental care — all paid for by trillions of dollars in tax increases on corporations and the wealthy.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi had hoped to put it to a vote this week, but she faced two problems: As of now, Democrats most likely do not have the votes, and Senate Democratic leaders have yet to produce a detailed bill that can draw the support of every member of their caucus.

Several conservative-leaning Democrats in both chambers, including Senators Joe Manchin III of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, have said they cannot support the plan as proposed. And because Republicans have made it clear they are unified in their opposition, Democrats cannot afford to lose even one vote from their party in the Senate and can afford to lose as few as three votes in the House.

Mr. Biden has been negotiating with the holdouts to determine what they could support. But for now, the lack of agreement on the sprawling plan is blocking its progress — and leaving the fate of the infrastructure measure uncertain as well.

Dodgers homer four times in inning vs. Padres; complete unlikely comeback to keep pace in NL West race - CBS Sports

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

USATSI

The Los Angeles Dodgers notched a come-from-behind victory against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night, winning by an 11-9 final (box score) that ensures they'll remain two games back of the San Francisco Giants in the National League West race for another night.

The Dodgers entered their half of the seventh trailing the Padres by a 9-5 margin. Mookie Betts delivered his 22nd home run of the season, a solo shot, to reduce the deficit to three. The Dodgers then treated Padres reliever Emilio Pagán's outing as their personal batting practice session during the eighth inning. Max Muncy welcomed Pagán to the game with a home run; A.J. Pollock subsequently followed with a dinger of his own, his second of the evening, making it a one-run contest.

Pagán was able to retire Chris Taylor, but that didn't end his nightmarish outing. Rather, Pagán then gave up a game-tying blast to Cody Bellinger, who was in the game only after Gavin Lux injured himself on a catch attempt. Pagán was allowed to face one more hitter, permitting a double to Justin Turner before finally being removed in favor of Nabil Crismatt.

Unfortunately, for San Diego, Crismatt didn't fare much better. Sure, he induced a fly out from Betts, but he then surrendered a two-run shot off Corey Seager's bat, completing the Dodgers' comeback by giving them an 11-9 lead.

Overall, the Dodgers notched nine extra-base hits over the course of the evening, including six home runs. Four of those came in the eighth inning, marking the first time since 2016 the Dodgers had hit that many home runs in an inning.

The Giants were able to dispose of the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier on Wednesday night, meaning the Dodgers did not gain ground in the division race. Still, the victory kept the Dodgers within two games of the Giants with both teams having four contests remaining on their schedules.

The odds are not in favor of the Dodgers coming from behind to win, but then, that was also true on Wednesday night.

Hatton in four-way lead at Alfred Dunhill Links Championship - Reuters

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

Sept 30 (Reuters) - Englishman Tyrrell Hatton put a poor Ryder Cup outing behind him to card an eight-under 64 and grab a share of the lead after the first round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on Thursday.

Belgium's Nicolas Colsaerts, Spaniard Adri Arnaus and China's Li Haotong were also eight-under at the top of a bunched-up leaderboard. Three others, including Scotland's Ewen Ferguson, were one stroke back.

The tournament is being held across three courses in rotation over the opening three days -- the Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns -- with the final round to be played at St Andrews.

Hatton, who won just one of his four matches and earned 1.5 points for Europe at Whistling Straits, started slowly but shot five birdies and an eagle on the back nine to vault into the lead before Li matched him with three straight birdies at the end of his round.

Hatton's European team mate Tommy Fleetwood was two shots back, having stitched together a solid bogey-free round of 66.

However, there was disappointment for Shane Lowry, who shot a one-under 71, while Padraig Harrington finished with a dismal three-over 75.

ACC Strategic Validation Exercise Four – Agile Combat Employment and CAFFORGEN - Tyndall Air Force Base

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com
JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. --

Air Combat Command welcomed Active-Duty wing commanders and their designated representatives from 28 wings within the command to Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia for the Strategic Validation Exercise 4, August 31 – Sept.1, 2021.

As the fourth iteration of the SVE series, this exercise was dedicated to stress-testing and refining key concepts of the new Air Force Generation (AFFORGEN) model, force presentation (AFFORPRES), and Agile Combat Employment (ACE) at the Wing level of operations. This exercise also builds on its previous iterations which brought together key senior leaders to discuss AFFORGEN reform and develop ACE as an operating concept.

“The goal of SVE4 is to bring together our wing commanders and address the long-term big rock issues for the Air Force with AFFORGEN and ACE concepts,” said Maj. Gen. Mark Slocum, ACC director of operations. “With the model we’ve had, the Air Force was eating up readiness faster than we could maintain it. AFFORGEN addresses that issue for our future Combat Ready Forces to be available for any high end fight.”

AFFORGEN is the new force generation model for building sustainable, high-end airpower readiness for the Joint Force. The model restructures force generation into four phases that span over a 24-month cycle: Available, Reset, Prepare, and Ready. During SVE 4, Wing Commanders were asked to work through how they would establish, train, prepare and present their forces to combatant commanders under the new model.

“Under the current AEF construct, we’ve lacked the ability to present an easily understood model that reflected all facets of airpower and the ability to clearly articulate readiness impacts,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr. “After nearly two decades of demanding rotational deployments, we are shifting to a model that builds high-end and sustainable readiness toward future missions by balancing elements of current availability, modernization and risk.”

The second concept, Agile Combat Employment, is a proactive and reactive operational scheme of maneuver executed within threat timelines to increase survivability while generating combat power.

“You can compare ACE to boxing, you want to stay out of the reach of your adversary, but be able to step inside their reach, perform combat requirements and get out,” said Maj. Cody Moore, force integration branch chief, ACC future operations division. “This allows our forces and Airmen to step back, out of harm’s way and then go back in when the adversary is not expecting it.”

The conclusion of the exercise provided commanders and key staff valuable feedback on the way ahead for implementing AFFORGEN and ACE to meet the Air Force’s goal of initial operating capability in fiscal year 2023. Examples of things the ACC team is taking into considerations are; pilot flying hour programs, aircraft maintenance timelines, all-domain training opportunities, ACE communication requirements, and professional management education for Airmen across the command.

“There are a lot of variables to AFFORGEN and ACE, we will try things and adjust as needed, and we surely won’t get it 100% correct at the start, but that is why we test and apply lessons to make it better,” Slocum said. “You’re part of massive change that’s coming for our forces for the future fight…this is an exciting time to be in the Air Force and bring needed change for our warfighters.”

Sound Advice: Looking for a better Lightning charging cable - TribLIVE

Q. My kids are making me nuts with constantly having to replace the Lightning charging cables for their iPhones. The official Apple ones aren’t great, and the Amazon ones do not seem not to last either. Do you have any recommendations?

— A.F., Upper St. Clair

A. I’ve gone through quite a few Lightning cables myself and get frustrated by the poor quality. They also seem to fail at the least opportune time, for example on a long trip when I am using my phone for navigation. This happened to me recently and I ended up paying a princely sum for a cable at a gas station so I could finish the journey without running out of power.

My favorite Lightning and USB cables are made by Anker. Anker cables are very well-made, last a long time and are available in most any configuration you would need. You may want to consider picking up an Anker Nano charger as well. This USB-C charger will charge your iPhone very quickly, with a 15-minute charge providing enough power for three hours of video. The Nano charger with a USB-C-to-Lightning cable sells for $29.95. us.anker.com

Q. Does the Technics SC-C70MK2 sound system play broadcast radio? Can I connect it to my TV for sound? What DVD player should I purchase and how do I connect it?

— D.B., Alameda, Calif.

A. The Technics SC-C70MK2 has a tuner for FM radio reception (but not AM radio) and can be connected to a television using the optical audio connection. When you connect a video disc player to your TV with an HDMI cable, the audio signal will be sent over the TV’s optical audio connection to the SC-C70MK2 for playback.

The SC-C70MK2 is an all-in-one CD music system that features an optical audio connection, Internet Radio, Spotify, Deezer, Tidal, Bluetooth, USB, DAB/DAB+, Chromecast, Airplay, and it works as a network player. The sound quality with the CD player and FM radio are enough to make it worth the asking price, but the multitude of playback formats as well as the advanced technology and high-end build quality make it a $999 bargain. Many readers have purchased the original SC-C70 and the newer SC-C70MK2, and I have never received anything but high praise from happy owners. technics.com

DVD players are obsolete and the standard definition video contained on a DVD is very poor compared to Blu-ray or 4K Blu-ray, especially when played on today’s large screens. Plan on buying a 4K Blu-ray player. It will play DVDs, Blu-ray Discs and UltraHD 4K Blu-ray Discs, as well as CDs (though the SC-C70MK2 has that covered.)

The $499 Panasonic DP-UB820 4K Blu-ray player is my top recommendation under $500. It uses the same video processing as the Panasonic DP-UB9000, the world’s best 4K Blu-ray player. This video processing makes your DVDs, Blu-rays and 4K Blu-rays look their very best, and the difference is quite noticeable compared to an ordinary player. Like the SC-C70MK2 it is a bargain for the performance received, especially if used with a very large TV or projector. Some value-priced picks are the $249 Panasonic DP-UB420 and $299 Sony UBP-X800M2.

AOGNY High Frequency RF Skin Care Machine: I received many emails from readers about the very popular AOGNY being sold out. I was told it will be back in stock towards the end of October and will have a follow-up column when it is available again.

GRAINS-Corn steady near four-week high ahead of U.S. stocks data - Reuters

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com
    * Grain markets consolidate before USDA quarterly stocks report
    * Mixed harvest reports, lower expected stocks underpin corn
    * Wheat, soybeans also firm as grains shake off dollar strength

By Gus Trompiz and Naveen Thukral
PARIS/SINGAPORE, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Chicago corn futures edged up on
Thursday to hold near a four-week high as traders awaited widely followed U.S.
grain stocks data expected to show tightening corn inventories.
Soybeans and wheat were also firm, with strength in international oilseed
and cereal markets helping offset pressure from a rising dollar.
Price moves were limited ahead of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's
(USDA) quarterly grain stocks report at 1600 GMT.
The most-active corn contract on the Chicago Board Of Trade (CBOT) was
up 0.3% at $5.40-1/2 per bushel by 1136 GMT, trading close to Tuesday's
four-week peak of $5.41-3/4.
"The report should show a substantial, but unsurprising, rundown in U.S.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
The report comes as the market has been assessing early yield reports from
the U.S. harvest, seen as crucial to replenish global supplies after a poor
Brazilian crop and brisk Chinese demand in the past year.
Analysts surveyed by Reuters expect the USDA to peg U.S. corn stocks at the
end of Sept. 1 at 1.155 billion bushels, down from 1.187 billion in a USDA
supply and demand report earlier in September.
Analysts estimate soybean stocks at 174 million bushels, close to the USDA's
last forecast of 175 million bushels.
CBOT soybeans were up 0.1% at $12.85-1/2 a bushel, while wheat
added 0.7% to $7.15-1/4 a bushel.
The USDA is expected to trim its estimate for the U.S. 2021 wheat crop in a
separate report to be issued alongside the stocks data.
Wheat markets have also been supported by brisk importer demand and rising
physical prices.
Traders will get a demand update on Thursday via weekly U.S. export sales
figures.
Grain markets expect U.S. exports to pick up after recent storm disruption,
but there remains uncertainty around the level of Chinese demand.
China's huge livestock sector is facing a hike in feed costs as power
outages force soybean crushing plants to close, analysts and industry
participants said.

Puget Sound Energy provides solar grant to Lummi Nation School - whatcomtalk.com

Submitted by Puget Sound Energy

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) has provided a Green Power Solar Grant to a partnership between the Lummi Education Division, Lhaq’temish Foundation, Lummi Indian Business Council and Northwest Indian College. The grant will be used to install a 50.4 kilowatt (kW) solar array at the Lummi Nation School as part of an ongoing effort to provide assistance to our communities, an effort that is heightened by the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

PSE is committed to supporting those who serve families and individuals in our communities through its Green Power and Solar Choice programs, PSE awarded more than $1 million in grant funding to 15 organizations in its service area to install new solar projects—the highest amount distributed through the programs to date.

Recipients range from local non-profits, public housing authorities and tribal entities serving low-income and Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) community members and projects that further clean energy in the region.

“We’re excited to be awarding Lummi Nation School a Green Power Solar Grant as we continue to create a clean energy future for all,” said PSE Director of Product Development Will Einstein. “Our customer’s participation in PSE’s voluntary renewables programs allows us to help fund new solar projects that create energy cost savings that they can use to support their core mission.”

The annual generation of the 15 projects will total nearly 560,000 kWh, equivalent to powering nearly 50 average homes each year with newly installed solar from the Puget Sound region. The goal is to help local organizations reduce operating costs while also reducing their carbon footprint by using renewable energy they’ve generated.

Bernie Thomas, Lummi Nation Education Director, says “Green energy may not yet possess the panacea solution to global warming, but incremental, positive steps like the Solar Project at Lummi Nation School, and partnerships with NWIC faculty, help the tribal member students envisage solutions to incubate and grow. As our students make their way into their individual lives, they understand that reversing climate change is in the hands of their generation.”

To date, the PSE Green Power Program has funded 52 projects with nearly $3 million in grant funds to support local renewable energy.

PSE is committed to working together to create a clean energy future for all while setting an aspirational goal to be a Beyond Net Zero Carbon company by 2045. PSE will target reducing its own carbon emissions to net zero and go beyond by helping other sectors to enable carbon reduction across the state of Washington. Partnering with our customers like this helps PSE engage more people in that mission.

Four bystanders, 1 suspect wounded in West Town shooting, police say - Chicago Tribune

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

A gunman leaned out the window of a speeding car and began shooting — leaving four bystanders wounded, one critically, along a busy stretch of Milwaukee Avenue packed with restaurants and bars on Wednesday evening in West Town.

The shooter was inside one of at least two cars that were “chasing” each other, said Chief of Patrol Brian McDermott, who delivered brief comments about the attack, which left “multiple crime scenes” stretching about one mile — from Chicago Avenue to Kinzie Street.

Four “unintended targets,” were shot — one of them was critically hurt, said McDermott, who did not elaborate on their ages or genders. A fifth person, who McDermott called a “possible suspect,” was also shot and taken to a hospital. Responding officers rendered aid to at least one of the victims.

The attack, which happened about 5 p.m., remains a “very active” investigation, McDermott said.

Several shell casings were found in about a two-block radius of the intersection of Milwaukee and Grand avenues and Halsted Street after the shooting, Chicago Fire Chief Walter Schroeder said earlier.

Schroeder said four people were taken by ambulance to Northwestern Memorial Hospital; two were in serious to critical condition while the other two were in good condition.

The neighborhood is home to several popular restaurants and bars, including La Scarola, Piccolo Sogno, Richard’s Bar, Maillard Tavern and The Dawson. Staffers there had no immediate comment.

Detectives were looking for video surveillance of the shooting and asked that anyone with information should contact police or www.CPDTIP.com.

A Deaf Man Who Couldn't Hear Police Commands Was Tased And Spent 4 Months In Jail - NPR

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

Brady Mistic, a deaf man, is suing the city of Idaho Springs, Colo., and others over his 2019 arrest. Raymond Bryant

Raymond Bryant

When Brady Mistic drove into the parking lot of a Colorado laundromat one day in September 2019, he thought he was about to run a routine errand.

But moments after exiting his car, Mistic was blinded by the lights of a parked police cruiser. Two Idaho Springs police officers began shouting commands at Mistic, who was 24 at the time. One officer threw him to the ground, and the other stunned Mistic with her Taser, according to a new federal lawsuit.

The officers claim Mistic resisted arrest, but the Coloradan says there was a different reason for his confused behavior when police confronted him: He couldn't hear them. Mistic is deaf in both ears, isn't able to lip-read and uses American Sign Language to communicate.

Now, he is suing the two officers, the city of Idaho Springs and the Clear Creek County Board of Commissioners, arguing that police violated his civil rights when they violently arrested him without warning.

"They went to force unreasonably fast, unreasonably rashly, without any legitimate justification for using force, which is particularly problematic for a person who's disabled like Mr. Mistic was," Raymond Bryant, Mistic's attorney, told NPR.

Mistic spent more than four months in jail, only to have the charges against him dropped eventually, the suit says.

In a statement, the Idaho Springs Police Department said the two officers didn't know Mistic was deaf during the initial encounter and maintained that Mistic resisted arrest, causing one of the officers to break his leg.

The department added that former Idaho Springs Police Chief Christian Malanka reviewed the matter and found the officers' actions were appropriate.

Mistic's arrest and the aftermath

On Sept. 17, 2019, former Idaho Springs Police Officer Nicholas Hanning and Officer Ellie Summers, who was in training at the time, followed Mistic into the laundromat parking lot after they allegedly witnessed him run a stop sign.

Mistic got out of his car and started walking toward the laundromat. Police said Hanning and Summers ordered him to get back into his car and, when he didn't, tried to place him in handcuffs "due to his unexplained actions," at which point he resisted arrest.

But he didn't know what the officers wanted or even if their "presence had anything to do with him," according to the lawsuit Mistic filed in federal court this month in Colorado.

Bryant said his client did not resist arrest but rather put his hands up when the officers approached him. "A person would have to know they're under arrest in order to resist arrest," Bryant said.

After he was on the ground, Mistic yelled "no ears" to try to communicate to the officers he was deaf, but they ignored him, the suit says.

Summers told emergency medical staff called to the scene that Mistic was deaf, but neither officer ever tried to secure an ASL interpreter, according to the suit.

Mistic then spent more than four months in jail and says he was repeatedly denied an interpreter.

Police charged Mistic with assault on a first responder, obstructing a peace officer and resisting arrest. He was also charged with possession of forged currency, the suit says, because police found movie-prop money in his wallet.

The charges were later dropped, according to the lawsuit. Police said the district attorney's office for the 5th Judicial District let Mistic participate in a diversion program in lieu of facing formal charges.

Hanning was later charged with third-degree assault and fired from the police force in a separate case in which he allegedly used his Taser on a 75-year-old man, according to The Associated Press. Summers, who used a Taser on Mistic, according to the lawsuit, is still an officer with the Idaho Springs police.

Climate change will be an alpha generator for the next four decades, says CalSTRS CIO - CNBC

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

ESG investing, or when a company's environmental, social and governance factors are evaluated, is booming, and a panel of sustainability-focused investors said the trend is only going to accelerate from here.

Climate change "is a mega-trend that if you take advantage of it, and get ahead of it, it's going to be an alpha generator for the next 30 or 40 years," CalSTRS Chief Investment Officer Christopher Ailman said Wednesday at CNBC's "Delivering Alpha." "If you don't pay attention to it, it's going to be a negative alpha and you're going to be stuck with a low-beta return."

Wendy Cromwell, vice chair at Wellington which had $1.4 trillion in assets under management as of the end of the second quarter, echoed these comments, saying of climate change that "investors need to study it, and companies need to be prepared for it."

ESG investing is booming, with global assets in sustainable funds hitting $2.24 trillion at the end of June, according to data from Morningstar. Assets first topped the $1 trillion mark in the second quarter of 2020.

But the ESG boom has given rise to its fair share of critics. By nature ESG is subjective, and without standardization across companies and industries it's hard to evaluate if an ESG-branded product is actually delivering on its stated goals.

"There's no question there are some asset managers who are just using those words because it's a marketing tool," said Ailman, although he doesn't believe ESG has reached bubble status.

Regulators in Washington are currently looking into ESG investing with a number of proposals on the table. Cromwell said first and foremost it's all about data. In terms of the "E" element, she said disclosures around scope one, two and three emissions should be required for all U.S.-listed companies. She added that it's important for scientists and investors, who often speak different languages, to work together to assess the long-term physical risks for companies from climate change, such as from wild fire and flooding exposure.

Carine Ihenacho, chief governance and compliance officer at Norges Bank Investment Management, said it's vital to cut through the noise around company promises and the ESG investing boom more generally.

"Find out what types of issues are material to companies...how does the company manage it, and how does the company then report the progress," she said. Norges is the world's largest sovereign wealth fund with more than $1.4 trillion in assets under management.

The fund previously announced plans to phase out fossil fuel exposure, specifically around companies engaged in exploration and production. More funds are following suit — often succumbing to pressure — including Harvard University, which earlier this month said it will stop investing in the fossil fuel industry.

But Ailman cautioned against viewing divestment as a be all and end all strategy. He considers divestment to be ESG 1.0, while engagement — a far more useful and important strategy — to be ESG 2.0.

"Divesting doesn't reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. Engagement does. I can't emphasize that enough," he said. "Engagement and turning peoples' attitudes, turning companies around, is what's absolutely critical now because climate changes isn't just the energy industry, it's a lot of other industries, and the whole world has to change."

This attitude played out when CalSTRS joined upstart activist fund Engine No. 1 in the fight for representation on Exxon's board.

The fund garnered support from high-profile investors like CalSTRS, and ultimately placed three of its four nominees on Exxon's board of directors following a close and contentious vote at the oil giant's annual meeting.

"We took on that board. We changed that board and we are really changing that company from the top down," he said, noting that Exxon has the scientists, resources and capital to move the needle on issues like carbon capture.

"That was huge," he said of shaking up the board. "It was climbing Mount Everest when you just take up mountaineering for the first time."

Analysis: Wall Street nervous about Washington as debt-ceiling warnings sound - Reuters

NEW YORK, Sept 29 (Reuters) - The slim-but-growing possibility of a fiscal crisis if Congress doesn’t act on the debt ceiling is getting increasing attention from U.S. investors and is filtering into certain asset prices, though few believe the nation will ultimately default.

Warnings have been rung from policymakers to Wall Street bankers of the risk that talks go down to the wire. Jamie Dimon, chief executive of JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N), said the bank is preparing for what could be a "potentially catastrophic event," while New York Federal Reserve Bank President John Williams warned of potential negative market reaction if no solution is found to the debt-ceiling issue. read more

"There's a very packed legislative calendar over the next few weeks and there are significant tail risks in the short term," said Jon Adams, senior investment strategist for BMO Global Asset Management. "Our view is that ultimately cooler heads will prevail."

Some signs of nervousness are showing in U.S. markets as the U.S. Congress faces a pair of approaching deadlines to fund the government and address the nation's $28.4 trillion debt ceiling. It has a Sept. 30 deadline to avert the start of a shutdown of government services. Secretary Janet Yellen has urged Congress to act before October 18 to avert "serious harm" to the economy. read more

"If the government shuts down that's not a big deal, but if they continue to play games with the debt ceiling that can cause big problems" and lead to a significant sell-off throughout financial markets, said Randy Frederick, managing director of trading and derivatives for the Schwab Center for Financial Research.

The mounting possibilities that Congress could fail to act in time to prevent a shutdown or debt default were cited by some as contributing to equity weakness in recent days. In currency markets, some analysts believe worries over the debt ceiling have helped boost the U.S. dollar .

The situation remains at an impasse. Democrats in Congress on Wednesday said they would vote to head off an imminent government shutdown before funding expires at midnight on Thursday. The House and Senate may vote on a separate bill that temporarily lifts the debt limit, but Senate Republicans refuse to vote for it. read more

Still, since the United States has been down to the wire on this before, investors have voiced a nonchalant view on the issue.

"It's hard to know if the market really cares about the debt ceiling," said Kathy Jones, chief fixed income strategist at the Schwab Center for Financial Research. "If you're kind of rational you probably don't, because somehow it gets resolved. On the other hand, it's a risk you can't ignore."

Wells Fargo analyst Michelle Wan wrote on Tuesday that investors have "so far responded with a shrug" to the looming deadline, with complacency "rooted in past compromises that avoided defaults and other payment disruptions."

Debt ceiling-related nervousness has, however, been showing in the Treasury bills market. Michael Purves, CEO at Tallbacken Capital Advisors in New York, wrote in a note on Monday that tension was seen in the pricing of three-month bills which "presumably won't be burdened by default risk" compared with one-month bills. Still, that has yet to reflect the more dramatic spikes in 2011, 2013 and 2015, Purves said.

One-month bills currently yield 0.07%, higher than three-month bills which yield 0.04%. At the beginning of the year, both yielded around 0.08%.

Portfolio managers typically avoid bill issues at risk of default even if the likelihood of a failed payment is very low. This can send yields on some issues higher than those on longer-dated debt, an unusual occurrence in the yield curve, which is typically upward-sloping. read more

Reuters Graphics

Analysts at BMO said that "as investors’ attention remains trained on Washington the distortions" in the front end of the yield curve "are likely to persist until an accord is reached."

In another sign of concern, analysts at TD noted a sharp jump in thinly-traded U.S. credit default swaps .

Past crises have shaken the market - but only temporarily. A technical default and subsequent downgrade of U.S. debt in 2011 helped push the S&P 500 almost 20% from its high before it rebounded.

Reuters Graphics Reuters Graphics

Another prolonged debt-ceiling negotiation in 2013 pushed the S&P 500 down 5.8%, but there was little market reaction to similar deadlines in 2016 or 2018 as Wall Street began to see the threat of crisis as manufactured, said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research.

Still, sensitive markets such as money markets have not shown rising levels of panic, according to Peter Crane, head of Crane Data, which focuses on the money market industry.

"They might pull up to the last minute but everybody knows both sides are bluffing," said Crane.
