‘The Bachelorette’ Recap: Makeshift Hometown Visits and a Final Four Who Are All Men of Color - Variety

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read if you have not watched the Nov. 30 episode of “The Bachelorette.”

In a franchise first, all of “The Bachelorette” lead Michelle Young’s final four were men of color, and she visited versions of their hometowns that production set up within their isolation bubble in Minneapolis, Minn. on the Nov. 30 episode of the ABC dating competition series.

As each contestant — Brandon Jones, Rodney Matthews, Joe Coleman and Nayte Olukoya — introduced her to their loved ones, in a franchise first, the hometowns episode saw families of color consistently represented on the show.

Brandon
Brandon’s makeshift hometown was first, where he was joined with his mom, dad and brother Noah. Noah, who recently enrolled with the Navy, postponed his leave to make the trip to meet Michelle.

Before she met the family, Brandon wanted to show her a bit of home, and they spent the afternoon at the skatepark. Despite his skills being less than impressive, Michelle was still just as charmed.

When Michelle finally met his family, she was equally smitten. She commented that she could imagine both of their families spending time together, and she immediately felt supported by the entire crew.

Rodney
Rodney, who arrived on night one in an apple costume as “the apple of Michelle’s eye,” took Michelle to an apple orchard to celebrate his hometown. They spent the afternoon together before Rodney introduced Michelle to his mom and stepdad.

His mother was originally protective of her son and expressed concern about Rodney getting hurt. Despite that, she warmed up to Michelle after hearing about how much fun they had together and how they kept each other laughing all the time.

Joe
Joe’s hometown was different than the others, as it took place in his native city. As a Minneapolis local, he had the advantage of showing Michelle his high school, where he hosted a throwback prom. In an earlier episode, Michelle confessed to not feeling “picked” during her high school career, and Joe tried to correct the situation.

Afterward, he introduced Michelle to his parents, brother and sister-in-law. His sister-in-law narrated the interactions and said that the Coleman men — who are naturally quiet anyway — get even quieter when they’re nervous. She joked that she hoped things would work out since they’d likely run into each other at the local grocery store regardless.

Joe’s family admired that Michelle had brought out more energy in him, and they recognized his growth. When he and Michelle had time together, Joe said that he was falling in love with her.

Nayte
Nayte was last, and tried to recreate his current hometown of Austin, Texas by taking Michelle paddle boarding. Afterward, the pair met with his mom and stepdad, despite the couple recently separating.

Michelle was visibly nervous, but Nayte reassured her. He said that the family wasn’t particularly emotional and prepared her that they would be protective. They were, and they expressed concern that Nayte had been “swept up” in the environment.

The most emotional moment came between Nayte and his stepdad, Charles. Nayte expressed his feelings for Michelle, and Charles countered, questioning if his feelings were true or sustainable. The conversation led to a tender place, with Nayte saying that he wanted to embody his stepdad for his future family. By the end of the exchange, the two men had exchanged “I love yous” for the first time.

In the debrief with Michelle, Nayte credited her for bringing the family together. She was moved by his emotion but began to panic about his family’s remarks and that he wouldn’t be ready for a commitment.

Post-Hometowns
After a brief cameo by Michelle’s friends (and former contestants) Bri Springs and Serena Pitt, Michelle prepared for the rose ceremony. She cushioned the elimination by telling the men that it was the hardest one yet before she sent Rodney home.

With three men left, the episode wrapped with a teaser for next week’s “Men Tell All” special and a first-look sizzle reel of next season of “The Bachelor,” featuring Clayton Echard.

“The Bachelorette” airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Four family members dead in Indiana murder-suicide, authorities say - NBC News

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

Four members of an Indiana family were shot to death, including the suspected 20-year-old assailant, in what authorities described Tuesday as a murder-suicide.

Officers were dispatched to a home in Fort Wayne on Monday night after a report of gunfire, the Allen County Sheriff's Department said in a written statement. Looking through a window, the officers saw "multiple people down" inside, the department said.

After entering, they removed an unharmed witness, the statement said.

Chief Deputy Troy Hershberger told NBC affiliate WPTA of Fort Wayne that an elderly woman had been at the home when the shootings occurred and dialed 911. She hasn't been identified and her relationship to the victims isn't clear.

In a written statement, Allen County Coroner E. Jon Brandenberger identified the victims as Mark Long, 50; Lisa Long, 45; and Mahala Long, 15.

They died from multiple gunshot wounds, he said, and their deaths were ruled homicides.

Samuel Long, 20, died by suicide, Brandenberger said, describing him as the victims' son and brother.

In the interview with WPTA, Hershberger said a possible motive remained unclear.

"We do not know why at this point," he said. "I don’t know that we’ll ever know why."

Additional details about the killings weren't immediately available.

Fort Wayne, in the northeastern corner of the state, is roughly 120 miles north of Indianapolis.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255, text HOME to 741741 or visit SpeakingOfSuicide.com/resources for additional resources.

Michigan mauls its way to College Football Playoff top four, joining Georgia, Alabama and Cincinnati - ESPN

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

Michigan's first victory over rival Ohio State in 10 years has given the Wolverines a clear path to their first appearance in the College Football Playoff.

After upsetting the Buckeyes 42-27 at the Big House on Saturday, the Wolverines are No. 2 in the selection committee's latest rankings, which were released on Tuesday night. The final rankings, which will determine which four teams will play in the two CFP semifinals on New Year's Eve, will be released on Sunday at noon on ESPN.

Unbeaten Georgia remained No. 1 for the fifth consecutive week, followed by Michigan, Alabama, Cincinnati and Oklahoma State.

As long as Michigan defeats No. 13 Iowa in Saturday's Big Ten championship game in Indianapolis, it figures to play in a CFP semifinal at either the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic or Capital One Orange Bowl.

Georgia reached 12-0 for the first time since its last national championship season in 1980 with a 45-0 victory at Georgia Tech on Saturday. The Bulldogs play Alabama in Saturday's SEC championship game in Atlanta. Georgia might get in the CFP even if it loses to the Crimson Tide because of its dominance this season.

"I don't see how that has anything to do with anything," Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart said. "I've said all my career that to win SEC championships is almost just as hard, because the years I spent at Alabama you could say that winning the SEC championship was just as hard as trying to win a national championship, and it's one of our goals. We want to put it on this wall in [the team meeting room], and to do that, you've got to win the SEC. That's what we're focused on."

The Crimson Tide's ranking remained unchanged after yet another closer-than-expected victory, a 24-22 win in four overtimes at Auburn in the Iron Bowl. Alabama, the defending national champions, won each of its final three SEC games by seven points or fewer.

Cincinnati, which is attempting to become the first team from a Group of 5 conference to crash the CFP, plays No. 21 Houston at home in Saturday's AAC championship game on ABC.

The Cowboys, after a 37-33 win against Oklahoma in Bedlam on Saturday, have their highest ranking this season. If Oklahoma State defeats No. 9 Baylor in Saturday's Big 12 title game on ABC, it might leapfrog the unbeaten Bearcats, or move into the top four if Alabama or Cincinnati loses.

"There was a lot of discussion, but it's hard to say how it fell at three, four and five," selection committee chair Gary Barta, the athletic director at Iowa, said on ESPN's rankings release show.

With just one loss to the Bearcats, Notre Dame is No. 6, followed by Ohio State, Ole Miss, Baylor and Oregon. The Fighting Irish, who lost coach Brian Kelly to LSU on Monday, don't play this weekend and will have to wait to see how things shake with the other contenders.

"I think this team is really well-positioned," Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick said Tuesday. "I believe we're one of the top four teams in the country. The cumulative results of our last four or five games, I think, are compelling. I think we can play with anybody in the country right now."

Coaching situations can factor into the discussion after next week's games, Barta said on the show.

"The committee was obviously aware of all the coaching changes," he added. "For this week, though, it didn't apply."

The Buckeyes fell five spots after losing to Michigan for only the second time in the last 17 meetings. Oklahoma fell four spots to No. 14 after falling to the Cowboys, and Texas A&M tumbled 10 spots to No. 25 after losing 27-24 at struggling LSU.

Kentucky re-joined the rankings at No. 23, and Louisiana is ranked for the first time this season at No. 24. Previously undefeated UTSA and Wisconsin, which was No. 14 a week ago, fell out of the rankings.

The Badgers being out could eventually hurt the Irish in the long run, as Notre Dame is counting on its September win over Wisconsin to help its final rank.

Four Notre Dame Players Recorded a Podcast Right After Brian Kelly News Broke - CalBearsMaven

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

Four Notre Dame football players—Kyle Hamilton, Cam Hart, Conor Ratigan and KJ Wallace—launched the Inside The Garage podcast on Colin Cowherd's "The Volume" network earlier this year. Last night, just as details of Brian Kelly's departure for LSU were coming out, they recorded an "emergency" edition of the show to give their reactions.

While plenty of people around the Notre Dame program are not thrilled with Kelly's abrupt departure, which comes with the Fighting Irish still on the fringes of the College Football Playoff picture, the players seem more understanding about the situation.

“It’s part of the business," Hart said. "I think the worst part is just the timing of it all. And that’s just why people are reacting the way they are. I feel like if this was at the end of a bowl game or at the end of a championship, rather . . . if we won a championship it wouldn’t get the reaction that we’re personally getting."

A major theme of the episode, and the one they recorded just hours before they knew their head coach would be heading South, is that players should be committing to programs rather than coaches.

All four players seemed in agreement on that, and aren't worried about the impact on Notre Dame football long term.

“Literally on the podcast we recorded two hours ago, three hours ago, whenever, I literally said that recruits shouldn’t be committing to a school because of the coach," Hart continued. "I’m getting all these texts and calls, like, ‘Yo, Are you okay? Come to my school, come to this school.’ One of my boys [said], ‘Come to Jackson State.’ Like, no bro, I’m fine, I didn’t come here for Coach Kelly. Like, respect for Coach Kelly, I have nothing but respect for the man, he’s helped me along the way, but I came here because of Notre Dame.”

Hamilton agreed, making a similar point later in the podcast:

“A lot of people have been saying this is going to kill ND’s recruiting. If it does, then honestly I think that it’s for the better," Hamilton said. "No offense to Coach Kelly, but I know what the school can offer me, I know what the people can offer me, and I know what the football, obviously, can offer me. The football’s not going anywhere. Everybody’s acting like the program is in shambles. We’re still going to be here, we’re in the Playoff hunt. We’ll see what happens with that. But if you’re committing to Notre Dame you’re committing to Notre Dame. You came here for a plethora of reasons, and one of those being football for sure, but there are so many other things that go into the school, that a coach leaving, no matter how good or bad he is, shouldn’t affect your decision.”

Hamilton says the worst part of the situation is the manner in which the news came out. He says that he holds the media more responsible than Kelly for the news breaking before he could tell his players.

“I think Coach Kelly has it the worst right now," Hamilton said. "He’s invested so much into his team, and every is saying stuff to his team except for him. He can’t say what he wants to say."

Unsurprisingly, the Notre Dame players like a pair of internal candidates to replace Kelly. Defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman, who is in his first year with the Fighting Irish after stints at Purdue and Cincinnati, is considered a rising star in the coaching ranks. It is unclear whether he'll get a chance moving forward, but all four players threw their support behind him. Ratigan also mentioned offensive coordinator Tommy Rees as an option.

SI Recommends

“I’ll put my vote out there for Marcus Freeman," Hamilton said. "Since he’s come in here it feels like we’ve known him for years. He’s even keel, he’s the same guy every single day. He’s a great leader, knows when to get on you, knows when to cheer you up. He has a great sense of how we’re feeling. He’s a realist in the way he talks to us as a defense."

“Freeman and Rees both being new coordinators . . . you can see automatically their connection with the players, their connection with the coaching staff, and everyone around them, the support staff," Hart said. "It's like night and day, it's like, automatic. We couldn’t go wrong with either of those coaches."

Based on comments from athletic director Jack Swarbrick today, it is unclear whether Freeman is a real candidate for the job. He says that Notre Dame has not selected an interim coach, and may not go with that traditional route. If there is an interim, however, that person will not be a full-time head coaching candidate.

Hamilton also addressed the light trolling he did on Monday night. As the news came down, the lifelong LSU fan posted a picture from the 2007 Sugar Bowl, where the Tigers dominated the Irish 41–14.

He knew the picture would prompt a wave of transfer rumors, and he made sure to shoot those down.

“I’m not transferring to LSU. I am an LSU fan, I still root for LSU unless they’re going against Notre Dame. So go Tigers, I hope Coach Kelly does well there until they run into the Irish," Hamilton said. "We are 2–0 against them in bowl games, so we kinda got their number.

"For Coach Kelly, I think it’s going to be a big shift for him, having to play in a conference year-in-year-out, playing the same teams. Different types of teams, different philosophies, whole different culture. That has to be daunting. I bet he’s coming into the first meeting like ‘Damn, I don’t know any of these kids, and they expect me to help change their lives and help change their families’ lives.’ And that’s, honestly respect to him for feeling like he has the ability to do that, and I think he does, honestly. He’s created such a culture here and I think he can do it anywhere else."

LSU made the Kelly hire official on Tuesday morning.

“I could not be more excited to join a program with the commitment to excellence, rich traditions, and unrivaled pride and passion of LSU Football,” Kelly said. “I am fully committed to recruiting, developing, and graduating elite student-athletes, winning championships, and working together with our administration to make Louisiana proud."

The NYPD is looking for four men who impersonated cops and stole a safe during a home invasion.

The heist went down on Nov. 5, when four men pretended to be police officers and forced their way into a woman’s apartment in the vicinity of University Avenue and West 175 Street.

Once inside, the thieves assaulted three women, ages 24, 60 and 79 and demanded money and drugs. They stole a safe and fled the scene in an unknown direction. A fourth man acted as lookout during the robbery.

The four individuals are described as Hispanic males who wore dark-colored clothing.

Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). 5 pro compression techniques to take your sound to another level - MusicRadar

So you know your ratio from your threshold, and on the whole, you've got your dynamics in check. Now you’ve got to grips with the basics of compression, here are a few advanced techniques to add to your repertoire…

Parallel compression

Parallel processing is an excellent way to introduce subtle changes in a mix, and nothing suits it better than parallel compression.

Parallel compression operates from the ‘bottom up’, so it doesn’t crush in the way that ‘top down’ compression does. It’s great for filling out a part, enhancing quieter details and making everything sound fuller and warmer without removing any of the punch. And luckily, with modern computer-based recording, it’s a piece of cake.

Parallel compression can work especially well on drums (to bring up room ambience and subtle details without crushing), or across a complete mix.

You basically run a heavily compressed version side-by-side with a clean version of the same signal – they are running ‘in parallel’, hence the name. When setting it up, mute and unmute the parallel compressed channel to hear the results clearly.

The advantage of this technique is that you can control exactly how much of the heavily compressed character sound you want in the mix, while keeping all of the impact of the original. See the step-by-step walkthrough below on how to set it up for yourself.

Logic pro x

Step 1: Route the signal you want to process to a new buss, so there are two channels sending the same thing to the output, and solo the new buss. Now compress the hell out it!

Logic pro x

Step 2: Use very fast attack times, high ratios, and a nice low threshold. You’ll end up with something that sounds very flat, very squashed and unnatural – but has lots of compressed character. Look out as vintage emulations may add distortion – or maybe this will sound good!

Logic pro x

Step 3: Pull the fader right down to 0 and then un-solo it, so you’re listening to the original, uncompressed channel again.

Logic pro x

Step 4: Now gradually lift the fader for the heavily over-compressed signal and blend as much as you like of the heavily compressed version back into the mix. Make sure you have plugin delay compensation switched on to avoid any problems with latency.

Chaining compressors

It’s often better to use several compressors in a row, each one only working quite gently, than to push one compressor very hard. This technique is known as ‘chaining’. A Urei 1176 followed by an Teletronix LA-2A is a real power-house of a combination, for example.

This technique was standard in the days when using analogue tape was a much more common practice. It was fairly normal to compress gently when going to tape, to get the best signal-to-noise performance. With tape, it was possible to record quite ‘hot’, allowing a little saturation to compress the sound further. After this, more compression would be used in the mix-down.

Limiting

A limiter is a compressor with a very high ratio – typically more than 20:1 – and very fast attack and release times. Limiters are often used in mastering because they offer a great way to control unwanted peaks and spikes in the sound. This enables you to use slower attack times elsewhere.

mixing desk

Multiband compression

Sometimes used on an entire mix during mastering, a multiband compressor splits the signal into several different frequency bands and applies compression to each one separately.

Care needs to be taken if you’re using multiband compression, though. Just the right amount can pull a mix together nicely, but too much can remove internal dynamics leaving you with nothing but a confused, over-compressed mush.

Sidechain compression

Some compressors can be set up to react to the input from another channel – the sidechain – so that this external effect triggers the compressor. Use fast attacks, high ratios and a longer release time – and make sure the effect works in time with the music.

Heavily EQed tracks can also be routed to a sidechain and used as a crude form of multiband compression; one example of this would be as a de-esser on a vocal.

Dave Douglas and Joe Lovano aim for the stratosphere on Sound Prints' 'Other Worlds' - wbgo.org

Sometimes the planets align. Earlier this year, four-fifths of the all-star band Sound Prints joined Nate Chinen in a WBGO listening party for their new album, Other Worlds.

Now, as Sound Prints settles in for an engagement at Birdland in New York, The Checkout joins forces with A Noise From the Deep — the in-house podcast of Greenleaf Music, hosted by trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas — to revisit that conversation.

Sound Prints is jointly led by Douglas and saxophonist and composer Joe Lovano, who illuminate us with the back story behind their latest studio album. It’s a cosmic journey that began almost a decade ago, when the duo sought to pay homage to one of their saxophone heroes, composer Wayne Shorter.

In short, they wanted to uplift Shorter’s legacy and "fearless, inventive spirit" by using their own Shorter-eque compositions as launching pads. Joining them on this quest is pianist Lawrence Fields, bassist Linda May Han OH and drummer Joey Baron.

Linda is the only band member that couldn’t join us for this lively conversation, conducted over Zoom. But the full band will be in flight over the next four nights) at Birdland. And in addition to the podcast, you can watch the unedited version of our listening party below.

Other Worlds is available now on Greenleaf Music.

Four-star to review 2019 Syria strike that killed dozens of civilians - Military Times

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

Fewer than two weeks after the Pentagon announced Nov. 3 that it found no misconduct in a review drone strike on Kabul that mistakenly killed 10 civilians, the New York Times reported that a similar, never-before-publicized strike on ISIS in Baghouz, Syria, had targeted a group of women and children and killed 70 civilians. Now, that strike is getting its own review.

Army Gen. Michael X. Garrett, head of Army Forces Command, has 90 days to review not only the strike itself, but how its results were investigated and briefed up the chain of command, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters Monday. Garrett held the top job at Army Central Command until 10 days before the March 18, 2019, strike.

“He will review the reports of investigation already conducted into that incident and will conduct further inquiry into the facts and circumstances related to it,” Kirby said, including the civilian casualties, compliance with the law of war, reporting procedures, whether lessons learned in previous investigations were implemented, whether discipline is recommended for those involved and whether any policies or procedures need an update as a result.

The original inspector general investigation into the Baghouz strike “was stalled and stripped of any mention of the strike,” the New York Times reported, a timeline Garrett will have to recreate as part of his review.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered the review following a Nov. 17 briefing, in which he mentioned both an internal and external review on U.S. airstrikes and civilian casualties. One is an annual requirement from Congress, while another is a Rand Corp. project on airstrikes in Raqqa, Syria, also during operations against ISIS.

“The American people deserve to know that we take this issue very seriously. And that we are committed to protecting civilians and getting this right both in terms of how we execute missions on their behalf and how we talk about them afterwards,” Austin said at the time. “And I recognize that and I’m committed to doing this in full partnership with our military leaders.”

Tom Morello has often used his art to advance political causes — as with his alter ego The Nightwatchman, his album “The Atlas Underground” and his involvement in the musical groups Rage Against the Machine and Prophets of Rage.

Music, of course, has played this vital role for as long as people have raised their voices in protest.

“We Shall Overcome” defined the civil rights era. Jimi Hendrix’s rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” redefined patriotism during the Vietnam War. And Tom Morello’s acoustic guitar rang out as he performed at Occupy Wall Street protests in 2011.

If you’ve read Morello’s recent essays in his subscriber-only newsletter, you’ve heard the opening notes of his thoughts on music and the clashing of ideas that shapes the world today.

Join us for a virtual event, for only Times subscribers, as Morello dives deeper into these themes. He’ll revisit the protest songs that defined moments of change — and explore the music that subscribers say defines this uncertain moment. He’ll also welcome musicians from across three different generations for a gathering filled with music, conversation and ideas.

Take a virtual front-row seat as Morello welcomes Jackson Browne, the voice of change for legions of baby boomers; Nadya Tolokonnikova of Pussy Riot, a band known for its potent mix of punk art and activism (which eventually led to its imprisonment by the Russian government); and the 11-year-old drumming prodigy, Nandi Bushell, who is already making waves on stages with the Foo Fighters and in songs that call for urgent action on climate change.

R.S.V.P. above for “The Sound of Activism with Tom Morello” on Dec. 15. This event will be moderated by Anna Sale, the host of the podcast “Death, Sex & Money,” and is free for Times subscribers.

What song do you think best defines our times? Become part of the event by nominating a song and telling us why you think it matters.

Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns show how quickly the tables can turn in college football - ESPN

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

NORMAN, Okla. -- Imagine the shock around Oklahoma -- the entire country, even -- following a move so bold and seemingly out of nowhere, yet obviously in the works for some time and impossibly kept under wraps.

That was four months ago, when we learned Oklahoma and Texas were bolting the Big 12 for the SEC.

The tables turned Sunday, when Oklahoma got the same treatment from head coach Lincoln Riley, who jilted the Sooners for USC.

It's a reminder that all's fair in love, war and college football.

Four months ago, Texas and Oklahoma were finagling their way into the most exclusive club in college football, changing the sport. Playoff expansion discussions immediately took on a new tone of suspicion. The Big 12 went into expansion mode, which shook up the American, which picked up schools and shook up Conference USA, and on down the line.

Texas had already begun preparations, firing Tom Herman and hiring Steve Sarkisian, who had recently been re-polished in Nick Saban's spin machine in Tuscaloosa after two previous head-coaching opportunities with mediocre results. The Longhorns brass banked on Sark's offensive prowess and his experience inside that Alabama operation to know what the Horns were up against. Oklahoma, with the supreme confidence of a school that has won 50 conference titles and seven national championships, announced it would be just fine.

"We believe the special Sooner magic that we will bring to the SEC will only make us, and our new conference rivals, stronger," Oklahoma president Jay Harroz said when the decision was announced on July 30.

All that's happened since? The Longhorns suffered through their longest losing streak since 1956 and the Sooners lost Riley -- Bob Stoops' hand-picked successor -- who became the first coach since 1947 to leave OU voluntarily for another college job.

In between, Texas lost to Kansas at home, endured soap-opera drama with a Halloween incident involving an assistant coach's pet monkey, a leaked video from a coach upset with players joking around after a loss to Iowa State, and had a starting wide receiver get into an argument with Sarkisian and later leave the team. Oklahoma suffered through a season of underwhelming wins and a couple of crushing losses, all while navigating a quarterback controversy as preseason Heisman favorite Spencer Rattler was supplanted by freshman Caleb Williams.

Big 12 teams never needed motivation to face either of them, but at every turn opposing crowds took glee in derisively chanting "S-E-C!," including Oklahoma State fans who stormed the field after their team beat the Sooners on Saturday. Texas suffered the brunt of it all season en route to going 5-7. But Oklahoma's turn came this weekend when Riley's abrupt exit shocked the entire state.

On his Sunday night show, Dean Blevins, the sports director of KWTV in Oklahoma City who grew up in Norman and played quarterback at Oklahoma from 1974 to '77, said the Bedlam loss coupled with Riley's departure will go down as one of the worst weekends in Oklahoma football history. A string of six straight conference titles was over, the team eliminated from contention by an in-state rival that's still seething from being kept in the dark in the realignment derby.

For now, Bob Stoops is back as the interim coach to hold down the fort while the Sooners look for the right man for the job. Riley, it turns out, was no longer it despite a 55-10 record at Oklahoma, four Big 12 titles in five years and three College Football Playoff appearances.

There hasn't been much elaboration on Riley's motivation, other than USC was a "unique opportunity." Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione said on Monday that Riley was "on board" with the SEC move and that they had frequent conversations about how they'd adjust in terms of staffing.

The one thing we don't know is whether Riley was involved in the SEC decision. One thing we do know is that he cares about winning. A lot. And the USC job offers a great deal of upside without beating your head against the wall in the SEC every week.

The SEC hasn't explained how divisions will break down in the expanded league, but it can be assumed Oklahoma's path would include some combination that frequently includes Texas A&M, LSU, Alabama, Auburn and the Mississippi schools, given that those are in the current SEC West, along with Oklahoma's blood rivalry with Texas. Alabama, LSU, Auburn and Texas have won 10 national championships in the past 15 years, and if you include Florida, another potential league opponent, that runs the total to 11 of 15.

At USC, Riley's path to the playoff would be through Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA, Colorado and Utah. Currently, only 9-3 Utah, at No. 19, is in the CFP rankings. The last Pac-12 school other than USC, which won NCAA-recognized titles in 2003 and '04, to win a national championship was Washington in 1991.

It brings to mind a conversation a few years ago with a longtime SEC coach on the subject of what constitutes a dream job. His response was simple: being the big dog in a mediocre conference, like Bobby Bowden was at Florida State or like Dabo Swinney became at Clemson when he surpassed FSU. At USC, the resources and recruiting ground are there -- particularly for Riley, who regularly mined Southern California -- to take command in a league that has struggled to get footing in the CFP era.

In July, Harroz included in his statement that, during the Big 12 era, Oklahoma won 20 national team championships, 101 conference titles and four Heisman Trophies, and produced 113 NFL draft picks.

But none of that matters moving forward. On Monday, Barry Switzer, the last coach to take over at Oklahoma after a coach left for another job -- Chuck Fairbanks to the New England Patriots in 1972 -- told ESPN that Riley's departure was a "tipping point" for the Sooners with the SEC move looming. There's no guarantee that long history of success at Oklahoma will continue, much like Nebraska has struggled since Tom Osborne retired, Frank Solich was fired and the Huskers moved to the Big Ten.

"You can't recruit off tradition," Switzer said. "S---, 18-year-old kids don't give a damn about Bud Wilkinson, Barry Switzer, Bob Stoops. They don't know who the hell they were."

After four months of shockers, Oklahoma is preparing for a new world with an unprecedented amount of uncertainty for a program that has prided itself on stability. The Sooners haven't known mediocrity since Stoops arrived in 1999. Stoops projected confidence in a news conference on Monday in his role as interim coach.

"OU football has been here a long time. And it isn't going anywhere else," Stoops said. "It's going to be here and it's going to be at the top of college football and it's going to continue that way."

But the SEC decision may test a fan base that's accustomed to decades of winning. Couple that with a coaching change, which is never a guarantee for quick success -- just ask Texas -- and all of a sudden, the landscape looks different in Norman.

On Sunday night at Othello's, the Italian restaurant at Campus Corner that was Switzer's old haunt and the site of his famed "Table of Truth" where he has held court for years, bar patrons talked about Riley being "the first casualty of the SEC move."

After a thrilling Bedlam win on Saturday night, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy also lamented the shakeup after what might have been the last rivalry game between the two in Stillwater, depending on when OU finally exits for the SEC.

"That's about as good as it gets for college football," Gundy said after a 37-33 win over the Sooners, just his third victory in 17 games against OU as a head coach. "We need to be careful about messing with the structure of college football. College football is pretty good the way it is."

But on Monday, USC athletic director Mike Bohn crowed about it when he introduced Riley as the Trojans' new coach.

"It was never our goal to change the landscape of college football with one of the biggest moves in the history of the game," he said, "but we did exactly that."

It marked a stunning end to a turbulent season for two teams that made their own landscape-changing moves, with the rest of the college football world waiting to see what's next.

At Othello's, one Sooner die-hard wore an "In Lincoln We Trust" shirt with Riley's face on a penny on it, unwittingly throwing it on in the morning before the news broke. Interesting choice of shirts, a reporter told him.

"I'll let you have it if you want," he said.

Martin Community Players debuts Sound of Music after pandemic halted performance - WITN

MARTIN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - The curtains will soon open on and the stage will come alive with the sound of music.

The Martin Community Players are debuting their performance of The Sound of Music Wednesday, more than a year after they initially planned.

He says this was a long time coming and they are thrilled to finally be able to put on the show with about 40 of the original cast and crew members.

The show will run Wednesday, December 1-Saturday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, December 5 at 3:30 p.m. at Riverside High School.

Tickets are available at the door, at Mast Pharmacy in Williamston and at Village Pharmacy in Robersonville.

ACC Bowl Projections: Syracuse is one of just four league teams that will miss the postseason - syracuse.com

Syracuse football coach Dino Babers pauses before answering quations about his future. The Syracuse Orange football team take on the Pittsburgh Panthers at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y. Nov. 27, 2021.Dennis Nett | dnett@syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. --For most college football programs, achieving a .500 record and becoming bowl-eligible is the bare minimum to consider a season successful.

This is especially true in the Power-Five, where programs enjoy a resource advantage over smaller schools and can traditionally build their non-conference schedules up in order to give themselves the best chance to reach the postseason.

Ole Miss Lands Four on United Soccer Coaches All-Region Team - Ole Miss Athletics

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Coming off of one of the winningest seasons in program history, Ole Miss had four players named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region Team on Monday, with Channing Foster, Molly Martin, Ashley Orkus and Haleigh Stackpole being honored.

Both Foster and Orkus landed on the first team for the second time in as many years, while Stackpole received her second all-region nod, moving up to the second team after being bestowed with third team laurels a season ago. Breaking out for her fifth year in Red and Navy, Martin earned all-region designation for the first time in her career as a second team honoree. All four players were also named All-SEC, the most all-conference representatives for the Rebels in program history.

One of the most potent scorers the SEC has seen in recent memory, Foster became the first player in league history to be named All-SEC five times in a career after scoring nine goals and assisting on six more. Suiting up in exactly 100 matches at Ole Miss, Foster finished with 44 career goals, tying Rebel legend Rafaelle Souza for the second most in program history. A fourth round selection in the NWSL Draft, the Murray, Kentucky, native will next make the transition to the professional ranks with the Chicago Red Stars.

The two-time defending SEC Goalkeeper of the Year, Orkus started all 21 matches between the posts for the Rebs, earning 11 wins with six clean sheets. Orkus earned a 1.34 goals against average, posting a .724 save percentage with 76 saves. The senior also came forward to take most free kicks near midfield, delivering the fourth assist of her career.

A four-year starter and key contributor throughout her five seasons, Martin finished her Rebel career on the highest of notes. The Evangelical Christian School product led the Rebels with 10 goals in her final season, having totaled just nine goals in her first four seasons combined, also pitching in one assist. For her efforts, Martin was named All-SEC for the first time in her career.

Already an all-region honoree from a season ago, Stackpole established herself as one of the most dynamic playmakers in the nation as a senior. The Bowling Green, Kentucky, native scored five goals on the season but left her biggest mark as a supplier, ranking third in the nation during the regular season with 16 assists, most in the SEC. Stackpole played a role in 21 of Ole Miss' 36 goals, the most of any player in the SEC.

Sound Artists Decline German Art Award: ‘Pitting Quality Against Diversity Is Pernicious’ - ARTnews

Sound artists Mendi and Keith Obadike declined to accept an honorable mention this weekend ahead of a ceremony for the annual Giga-Hertz Award administered by the ZKM Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany. On Saturday, Kieth Obadike published a statement on his Facebook account to announce that he and his partner declined to accept the honor in response to a ZKM representative’s comment that the organization “had to choose between ‘quality and diversity'” during a remote rehearsal for that award ceremony that was live-streamed. Obadike wrote, “Talk of pitting quality against diversity is pernicious and should not be tolerated.”

“A ZKM representative mentioned in his rehearsed commentary that this year was the award’s most diverse year with applicants from many countries and a number of women and people of color. As we waited on Zoom for our cue to begin our portion of the ceremony he mentioned they ultimately had to choose between ‘quality and diversity,'” Obadike wrote, describing the statement from ZKM as an “old false binary.”

The married artist duo were being recognized for their work Fit (the Battle of Jericho), a 10-minute-long multi-channel sound installation inspired by a 1930s African-American spiritual exhibited as part of the musician Vijay Iyer’s curated showcase “Relation” at New York’s Met Breuer in 2016. The couple, who are Igbo Nigerian American, have produced other major projects on race and American history including American Cypher, a 2013 piece that uses sounds recorded at Monticello, the Virginia plantation and estate of Thomas Jefferson, that was installed at the Studio Museum in Harlem.

In the artists’ joint statement, Obadinke said that because the organization’s commentary demonstrated racial bias, they found that ZKM is not suitable to administer awards to “artists from the global community.” Obadinke concluded that “the places where media art, electronic music, and sound art are overwhelmingly white and European by design suffer from a lack of intellect, a lack of vision, and a lack of imagination, and are therefore in no position to honor or rank us.”

The recipient of this year’s Giga Hertz Award, which in the past has recognized such luminaries as Pierre Boulez, Brian Eno, Laurie Anderson and Pierre Henry, was German composer Christina Kubisch, who received the main prize of €10,000 (around $11,000). Yvette Jackson and André Damião were awarded Giga-Hertz Production Awards. Maja S. K. Ratkje and Viola Yip were given honorable mentions. Each of the recipients accepted their awards during the formal ceremony on Saturday.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan mens gymnastics head coach Kurt Golder announced Monday (Nov. 29) that he is retiring after 25 seasons leading the Wolverines.

Just the fourth coach in the program's history, Golder led the Wolverines to four NCAA championships (1999, 2010, 2013, 2014) and six Big Ten Conference titles.

"Kurt Golder has been a positive advocate for the University of Michigan and the sport of men's gymnastics at a national level for a long time," said Warde Manuel, the Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics. "We are thankful for his accomplished service and wish him well in his next chapter."

Named the NCAA regional and national coach of the year in 1999, 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2021, Golder produced 118 NCAA All-Americans, 17 NCAA individual national champions and 40 individual Big Ten champions.

Golder graduated from Michigan in 1977 with a degree from the School of Education after earning three letters in gymnastics, and was a part of the Wolverines' 1975 Big Ten championship team. In 2008, Golder was inducted into the Alpena (Mich.) High School Alumni Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Alpena Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.

Assistant coach Yuan Xiao, now in his 16th season with the program, will lead the program on an interim basis. Michigan will begin its 2022 season on Jan. 8 against Northern Illinois.
